COVID-19 Money Story #8

Tamara’s story...

I've had the advantage of some good luck just before this whole situation. I'm 22 and studying at university at the moment in my second-to-last year of undergrad. While this is mostly funded by my student loan, including living costs, I also have a casual job and a monthly gig to help with expenses. My job has gotten the wage subsidy and has committed (at the moment) to continue paying casual employees their average pay so that is very helpful.

My luck is that I had decided to build up several months of expenses mid-2019 as me and my partner were going to leave our flatmates to find a smaller apartment in October. My original goal was $8000, but when I got an unexpected scholarship offer over summer I was able to bump it up to $10,000. I reached my goal in late February. I've also had a zero-sum budget since first I moved away from home and now it pays its metaphorical dividends in the knowledge that I won't need those savings until April at the earliest. Now I find myself in the strange position of being more financially secure than some of my friends and family in this crisis. It's a weird feeling in that sense but it also means I will be able to support myself and offer them support if they need it.
